In 1 Sam 5:1-12, we were told of how the Philistines took the Ark of God from Ebenezer to Ashdod. They captured an abomination thing of God. Worse still, it was brought and placed before Dagon the philistine god. They never knew it was problem visitor. When the people of Ashdod arose the following day, Dagon fell before the Ark of God. He bowed for the power in the Ark of God. The second time again, Dagon was put back to its original place, but again fell flat on the floor before the Ark of God. This time, the head and the palms of Dagon were cut off, remaining the torso. The hand of the Lord was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, because they were destroyed and plagued. The Ark of God of Israel was powerful over the people of Ashdod as well as Dagon. They now saw reason the Ark of God should not remain with them. They were foolish to convey the Ark of God to Gath another philistine territory where Goliath came from, and there was destruction upon them. They were afflicted with emerods in their private parts. Still with foolish attitude, they conveyed the Ark of God to Ekron another philistine territory. However, it seems they were not actually plagued, but the Ekronites cried out to reject the Ark of God in their city. Ark of God is a powerful something that cannot be toyed with. Let me paraphrase the Ark of God syndrome here. (1) It gave passage at River Jordan jos 3:17 (2) It brought death to Uzzah 11 Sam 6:6-7 (3) It enriched Obed Edom the Hittite 11 Sam 6:9-11 (4) It destroyed Dagon and his people as enumerated above. The question is”which power do you hold on to at high esteem? Therefore, my advice is for you and I to be wise and choose a right so as to belong to the side of God without pretence. The Lord knows those who are His. The grace to choose well, may the Lord bestow on us ijmn and learn to submit to God.
