Mark 4:35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side”. With this declaration, Jesus challenged the disciples to actually experience the parable of the sower(Mark 4:1-20). It is this “experiencing of Scripture” that is life transforming in our walk with Jesus. The sower(Jesus) had just sown the seed the (word of God) upon the disciples’hearts. How did they respond? As predicted in the parable, the seed was vehemently attacked. (1) Satan came to destroy the word-A furious squall came up, so Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the waves”peace be still”. (Mark 4:39). Then the wind died down and was completely calm. The word “rebuke” in this text was used by Jesus in other passages to refer to the evil one jude 9.(2) Tribulation came to destroy the word. When the storm hit, the “waves beat into the boat so that it was already filling”(mark 4:37). In a world of tribulation, the stresses of life can come from many sources such as family, friends, jobs, health, church and ministry. If our hearts are not guarded, the word can wither within us. (3) Caring for other things choked out the word. The disciples asked Jesus “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? (Mark 4:38). The cares of this life focus our hearts on popularity, material possessions or the success of others. If our hearts are not guarded, these cares will choke out the word. Much like these disciples, which Bible verses have you “heard” recently that you actually need to experience? Consider praying this prayer ” Lord, which Bible verses do I need to experience today? Don’t forget another parable of the sower of seeds, where some fell on the good ground, some on the rock and some on the thorns as illustrated by Jesus.
