In the ninth commandment, God forbids testifying falsely against one’s neighbour. This command has to do with honesty, integrity and telling the truth, which is part of moral fabric. We are forbidden from making false statements about or to our neighbour. In the world we live, people lie so that they get out of jam or avoid its consequences. Lying has bad consequences, because is of the devil. God is aware of the truth we say and when we lie,the devil rejoices, because he sees us as part of him. We are held at a very high esteem by God and anything that makes us deviate from the truth is falsehood, which God forbids. God’s identity is linked to truth as Jesus Himself is the way,the truth and the life John 14:6. If God is truth,He opposes all falsehood and when we lie, we disappoint our creator because He hears us and sees our action. Another aspect of lying is gossipping and slandering, for these activities damage others and our relationship with them by attributing untrue or destructive statement to them. When we lie against somebody where we are suppose to tell the truth, we are harming them. Lying has taken some people to prison unknowingly, and God will not clap for liars of this nature. Saying the truth edifies, encourages and build up. Falsehood is anathema to God. Just as our words have the potential to build up, they also have potential to tear down. When we say things to encourage others, we reflect the goodness of God and become a witness to God’s character. Falsehood contradicts the identity of God. God commands that we should not lie, rather the truth should set us free. John 8:36. We must adhere to the truth and use our words to uplift others.
