The tenth and final commandment admonishes us not to covet or possess the status of others. Inappropriate desire for something belonging to our neighbour is nothing but covetousness and is not desirable. When we covet our neighbor’s possession, we sin against God. Covetous includes anything that can take God’s place in our lives. This borders on how we prioritize things above God. We must control our desires for things so that they never surpass that of God. In Deut 6:5, the Bible says we should know and love God with all our souls, heart, mind and strength. Covetousness is like a venom that infects our minds by not being happy until we have what others have at all cost. This undermine our trust in God, the ultimate provider. Obsessing over others belongings shows dissatisfaction with what God has given to us. All things that we have come from God. Therefore, it’s disrespectful to crave for other people’s even though we don’t have them. Coveting demonstrates that we are not content or happy. It is a temptation to be greedy and never to be satisfy no matter how. We must remember that there are many worldwide who don’t have enough to survive. We should remain grateful to God for His blessings. Somebody who has no shoe is complaining, what about somebody without legs? We must not be greedy but be content with what we have so as to avoid pitfalls of greediness and wanting what we don’t need. This commandment summarizes the law. That is, there is no way a person could break any one of the commandments without breaking the tenth. This command lies at the root of all sin. We as Christians must be careful to avoid covetousness. We must be contented, not in worldly possessions, but in the person of Jesus Christ. May God give us the grace to adhesively follow after righteousness ijmn.
